The San Diego (LPD 22), a San Antonio-class amphibious transport dock, is the fourth ship of the U.S. Navy to be named for San Diego, California. The city is the home of Naval Base San Diego, the Navy's largest base in the Pacific.

June 12, 2010 The Pre-Commissioning Unit (PCU) San Diego was christened during a 10 a.m. CDT ceremony at Northrop Grumman Shipbuilding in Pascagoula, Miss. Linda Winter, wife of former Secretary of the Navy Donald Winter, served as sponsor of the ship. Cmdr. Jon E. Haydel is the prospective commanding officer.

October 2, LPD 22 received 100,000 gallons of fuel for the first time, achieving a key milestone required for engine light off, planned to occur in November.

October 1, 2011 PCU San Diego successfully completed builder’s trials in the Gulf of Mexico. The ship ‪‪‪will spend several weeks at Ingalls undergoing further tweaks in preparation for Navy acceptance trials, expected to be run in November by the Board of Inspection and Survey (INSURV).

October 7, The San Diego was damaged late last month when an improperly-installed relief valve caused part of the ship's ballast system to overpressurize, damaging three ballast tanks. There were no indications, as of Oct. 6, of any damage to the ship's hull or side shell. Following repairs, the ballast and deballast system and their tanks will be retested during acceptance trials; Completed acceptance trials Nov. 17.

December 19, The U.S. Navy took delivery of PCU San Diego during a ceremony at Huntington Ingalls Industries - Ingalls Shipbuilding in Pascagoula, Miss.

March 12, 2012 Rear Adm. Gerard P. Hueber, Commander, Expeditionary Strike Group 3, relieved Cmdr. Jon E. Haydel as CO while allegations of personal misconduct are investigated. Cmdr. Kevin P. Meyers assumed temporary command of the LPD 22.

March 19, PCU San Diego arrived in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, for a routine port call; Transited the Panama Canal southbound on March 25.

April 6, The Pre-Commissioning Unit San Diego arrived in its homeport of Naval Base San Diego, Calif., after a three-week transit from Pascagoula, Miss.

May 19, USS San Diego (LPD 22) was commissioned during a 10 a.m. ceremony at Navy Pier in downtown San Diego.

May 25, Capt. William L. Grotewold relieved Cmdr. Kevin P. Meyers as CO of the San Diego.

June 7, USS San Diego launched and recovered 11-meter rigid hull inflatable boat from the stern gate, while at anchor off the coast of San Diego, as part of the test of the prototype stern gate launch and recovery system, conducted by civilian engineers and scientists from SPAWAR Systems Center Pacific and associated contractor companies. The project is coordinated by the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) Program Management Office (PMS-408) and Office of Naval Research.

July 27, The San Diego returned to homeport after conducting routine training in the SOCAL Op. Area.

September 10, USS San Diego conducted its first ever underway replenishment (UNREP), with the Military Sealift Command fleet replenishment oiler USNS Yukon (T-AO 202), off the coast of southern California; Held an "Open House" at Naval Base San Diego from Sept. 15-16.

September 18, The San Diego recently moored at Deperming Pier on Naval Base Point Loma for magnetic deperming.

From December 6-7, the amphibious transport dock was underway for final contract trials.

December 12, LPD 22 commenced a five-month Post Shakedown Availability (PSA) at NASSCO shipyard in San Diego; Returned to Naval Base San Diego in April 2013.

May 29, USS San Diego returned to homeport after underway for routine training.

July 10, The San Diego is currently underway for routine training and Amphibious Warfare Certification, off the coast of southern California.

July 25, Rear Adm. Fernandez L. Ponds relieved Rear Adm. Gerard P. Hueber as Commander, Expeditionary Strike Group (ESG) 3, during a change-of-command ceremony aboard the LPD 22 at Naval Base San Diego.

November 12, USS San Diego departed Naval Base San Diego for deck landing qualifications in the SOCAL Op. Area; Underway again in late January.

February 7, 2014 Capt John V. Menoni relieved Capt. William L. Grotewold as the 4th CO of LPD 22 during a change-of-command ceremony aboard the ship at sea.

February 18, USS San Diego departed homeport to participate in Underway Recovery Test (URT) in support of NASA's Orion program.

February 20, The URT was suspended because the cables, attached to the mock-up of the Orion capsule, weren't strong enough to handle turbulence and snapped off twice while it was in the well deck of the ship.

March 13, The amphibious transport dock recently departed San Diego for Group Sail operations with the USS Makin Island (LHD 8); Underway for Amphibious Squadron (PHIBRON) 5/Marine Expeditionary Unit Integration Training (PMINT) from April 7-19; Underway for a Composite Training Unit Exercise (COMPTUEX) from May 6-22; Underway for local operations from May 2?-29; Underway for Certification Exercise (CERTEX) from June 10-23.

July 25, USS San Diego departed homeport for its scheduled maiden deployment.

August 20, The San Diego anchored in Victoria Harbour for a three-day port visit to Hong Kong.

From August 28 through Sept. 2, LPD 22 participated in a joint amphibious exercise MALUS AMPHEX 2014, off the coast of Sabah, Malaysia; Transited the Strait of Malacca on Sept. 6; Arrived in Gulf of Aden on Sept. 16; Transited the Bab el-Mandeb Strait northbound on Sept. 20 or earlier.

September 28, USS San Diego is currently participating in a joint combined exercise Cougar Voyage 15, in the Red Sea, with the Royal Navy’s Response Force Task Group (RFTG) ships.

October 26, The San Diego recently commenced offload of Marines and equipment at Arta Beach, Djibouti, for sustainment training exercises with the French military; Backload on Nov. 16.

November 26, USS San Diego recently moored at Khalifa Port in Taweelah, United Arab Emirates, for a liberty port visit to Abu Dhabi.

December 7, The amphibious transport dock ship commenced its participation in exercise Red Reef off the coast of King Abdul Aziz Naval Base, Saudi Arabia.

January 11, 2015 USS San Diego recently moored at Aqaba Naval Base, Jordan, to conduct agricultural counter-measure washdowns of all embarked equipment; Departed the U.S. Central Command AoO on Jan. 25.

February 14, LPD 22 moored at Berth B25 in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, for a four-day port visit and to embark friends and family members for a Tiger Cruise.

February 25, USS San Diego moored at Berth 2, Pier 8 on Naval Base San Diego following a seven-month deployment in the U.S. 5th and 7th Fleet AoR.

March 26, BAE Systems San Diego Ship Repair was awarded a $16,8 million modification to previously awarded contract (N00024-10-C-4407) for the USS San Diego's Selected Restricted Availability (SRA). Work is expected to be completed by November.

April 1, The San Diego departed homeport for a 10-day underway to conduct deck landing qualifications and ammo offload at Naval Weapons Station Seal Beach, Calif.

July 30, Carl W. Meuser relieved Capt John V. Menoni as CO of the USS San Diego during a change-of-command ceremony on board the USS Midway Museum.

November 17, USS San Diego moved "dead-stick" from BAE Systems Shipyard to Berth 5, Pier 4 on Naval Base San Diego.

March 9, 2016 USS San Diego departed homeport for sea trials following an extended 10-month availability; Moored at Bravo Pier, NAS North Island for a brief stop to onload ammo before underway for routine training on April 13; Returned home on April 18; Underway for well deck certification from May 2-6.

May 27, The San Diego moored at Berth 5, Pier 4 after an 11-day underway for routine training and in support of the "Leaders to Sea" program; Underway again from June 1-3 and June 14-1?.

June 21, USS San Diego departed homeport to participate in a biennial multinational exercise Rim of the Pacific (RIMPAC) 2016, as part of the USS America (LHA 6) ARG.

June 28, LPD 22 moored at Pier M1/M2 on Joint Base Pearl Harbor Hickam, Hawaii, for a 13-day port visit before participating in at-sea phase of RIMPAC.

July 30, USS San Diego, with an embarked Battalion Landing Team (BLT) 2/3, participated in amphibious assault exercise at Waimanalo Beach on Bellows Air Force Station, Oahu; Inport Pearl Harbor again from Aug. 2-5.

August 12, The amphibious transport dock ship moored at Berth 2, Pier 8 on Naval Base San Diego.

September 8, USS San Diego moored at Berth 2, B Street Pier in downtown San Diego after a brief underway to participate in the annual Fleet Week celebration; Held an "Open House" from Sept. 10-14; Moored at Berth 6, Pier 6 after a brief underway on Sept. 15; Underway again on Sept. 26.

October 2, The San Diego anchored in San Francisco Bay, Calif., for Defense Support of Civil Authorities (DSCA) exercise.

October 3, USS San Diego moored at Pier 30/32 in San Francisco for an eight-day port visit to participate in the 36th annual Fleet Week celebration; Brief underway for Parade of Ships on Oct. 7.

December 5, USS San Diego departed homeport for a four-day underway to participate in a Missile Exercise (MISSILEX), as part of the USS America ARG.

January 24, 2017 The San Diego moored at Wharf 3 in Port Hueneme, Calif., for a Loading Exercise (LOADEX); Returned home on Jan. 30.

February 2, Capt. Peter M. Collins relieved Carl W. Meuser as the 6th CO of San Diego during a change-of-command ceremony on board the ship at Pier 5.

February 10, USS San Diego moored at Berth 5, Pier 4 on Naval Base San Diego after a four-day underway for Group Sail; Underway for INSURV preparations from Feb. 14-15; Day-long underway for INSURV assessment on March 1.

August 6, USS San Diego moored at Finger Pier in Cam Ranh International Port, Vietnam, for a five-day liberty visit; Transited the Malacca Strait on Aug. 16.

August 17, USS San Diego anchored in Makham Bay for a five-day liberty port visit to Phuket, Thailand; Transited the Singapore Strait eastbound on Aug. 23; Transited the Malacca Strait northbound on Aug. 28.?

September 4, The San Diego recently arrived off the coast of Djibouti to participate in a sustainment training exercise Alligator Dagger.

September 17, USS San Diego transited the Suez Canal northbound in support of AFRICOM Counter Terrorism, Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance missions in the Gulf of Sydra.

October 15, LPD 22 moored at Berth K10, East Refueling Wharf in Souda Bay, Crete, for a six-day upkeep; Moored at West Berth K14 in Souda Bay from Nov. 27- Dec. 1; Transited the Suez Canal southbound on Dec. 12; Transited the Strait of Tiran northbound on Dec. 14.

February 21, USS San Diego moored at Berth 9, Deep Water Jetty in Mina Salman Port following the coronavirus outbreak aboard the ship; Departed Manama on March 11; Transited the Strait of Hormuz southbound on March 24; Transited the Malacca Strait southbound from April 7-8; Transited the Strait of Singapore eastbound on April 8; Participated in a photo exercise (PHOTOEX) on April 9.

April 18, LPD 22 moored at Berth 2, Victor Wharf in Apra Harbor, Guam, for a three-day port call; Conducted a replenishment-at-sea with the USNS Cesar Chavez (T-AKE 14) on April 23.

May 3, The San Diego arrived off the coast of Cold Bay, Alaska, in support of biennial joint exercise Northern Edge 21; Arrived off the coast of Camp Pendleton for offload on May 20.

May 23, USS San Diego moored at Berth 2, Pier 10 on Naval Base San Diego following a seven-and-a-half month deployment.

June 15, BAE Systems San Diego Ship Repair was awarded a $90,3 million contract for the USS San Diego's Drydocking Selected Restricted Availability (DSRA). Work is expected to be completed by November 2022.

July 6, USS San Diego moved from Pier 10 to Berth 6, Pier 12 on Naval Base San Diego; Underway again on July 10; Moored at Wharf 311, NWS Seal Beach for ammo offload from July 12-15; Moored at Berth 1, Pier 12 on July 16; Underway again from July 19-20; Underway in support of Large Scale Exercise (LSE) 2021 on Aug. 3.

August 16, The San Diego made a brief stop off the coast of Pacific Missile Range Facility Barking Sands, Kauai, Hawaii, to onload vehicles from the 1st Battalion, 12th Marine Regiment; Moored at Pier M2 on Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam from Aug. 17-20.

August 26, USS San Diego moored at Berth 2, Pier 10 on Naval Base San Diego; Moved "dead-stick" to Pride of California Dry Dock, in BAE Systems shipyard, in late evening on Sept. 27.

March 25, 2022 USS San Diego undocked, on late Friday evening, and moored at Pier 1S on BAE Systems shipyard; Moved "dead-stick" to Berth 2, Pier 12 in Naval Base San Diego on Dec. 13.

January 12, 2023 Capt. Ryan K. Rodgers relieved Capt. Henry S. Kim as Commander, Amphibious Squadron (PHIBRON) 3 during a change-of-command ceremony aboard the LPD 22.

January 20, Capt. David W. Walton, Jr., relieved Capt. Kevin W. Ralston as CO of the San Diego during a change-of-command ceremony on board the ship.

May 15, USS San Diego moored at Berth 1, Pier 8 on Naval Base San Diego after a week-long underway for sea trials, following a 20-month availability; Moved to Berth 5, Pier 4 on July 11; Underway again on July 26; Anchored at A-162 for a brief stop on July 27; Returned home "dead-stick" for emergent repairs, after suffered an engineering casualty, on July 28.

October 6, The San Diego departed homeport for routine training in the SOCAL Op.
